The Monday Night War Debate: 14 Things We Learned From Eric Bischoff & Bruce Prichard
3. The Turning Point
Jericho asks what the turning point in the war was, and Prichard responds that around the time of the screwjob, they may have been getting killed in the ratings, but the arena attendace and merchandise sales were really picking up. Nitro's success had made wrestling hot again and they benefitted from that. He calls Montreal a fresh beginning, saying that Bret was gone, Shawn no longer had his buddies around and was on his way out after WrestleMania, and this led to a groundswell of new guys getting red hot. Bruce says they started building momentum (trademark Michael Cole) when they took Vince from a commentator to admitting he was the owner of the company and working Montreal into the storylines, and the real turning point that pushed them into the lead was Mike Tyson showing up on Raw. Jericho asks Bischoff if he ever saw himself as being the man to put McMahon and the WWE out of business, and he says that while he didn't, he also didn't have a sense of how fickle success could be.
