Shane McMahon, Vince's son, sensationally leaves WWE - clearing the path for Paul and Stephanie to, perhaps, one day take over.

All the characters in the drama will later talk around what exactly happens to various outlets ever since. In the 2024 Netflix documentary Mr. McMahon, an evasive Shane says it was time to try new things. Vince, who likes to embellish a narrative, outright claims Shane wants him gone. Paul Heyman, another unreliable narrator, says Shane walked in part due to an intense creative disagreement that resulted in Vince saying to Shane that he would literally have to kill him to get it done.

The basic thrust of the gossip, true or otherwise, is that a doomed Shane realises who the true heir is - or, who the true heirs are - reads the room, and attempts to make it on his own.

Shane will return, in 2016, but only under a talent contract - his key, disastrous role in booking the 2022 Royal Rumble aside.
