What a pleasant surprise this was. Expectations were incredibly low for this reboot-sequel to the classic 1995 Robin Williams-starring movie, but you know what? It's pretty damn fun.

Sure, it's too long and not everything here works, but the jokes land more often than not, there's a clever engagement with the nature of video games, the action's fun and the central cast members, both humans and video game avatars, are terrific.

Johnson shines as Dr. Smolder Bravestone, though the film is categorically stolen away by Jack Black, whose performance as a high school girl residing in the body of a fat middle-aged man is delightfully funny.

Consider it the most shockingly good film of 2017. Who could have seen this coming?
