The SECRET Details Behind Sting's AEW Revolution Match
New details emerge on how Sting's retirement match was put together.
With Sting having called time on a truly legendary career at AEW Revolution this past weekend, there's now further details on how this retirement match was put together.
Of course, that contest saw Sting and Darby Allin successfully retain the AEW Tag Team Titles against the Young Bucks, with one particularly notable spot seeing Darby fall from a ladder in the ring through a sheet of glass that was resting on some steel chairs outside of the ring.
In a new Sports Illustrated report, the Revolution main event came off perfectly and as was intended. As for that insane, scary, brutal Darby Allin spot, Allin himself pushed hard for this to happen. Also, given the high risk involved, there was a Plan B in place should Darby not be able to continue the match after this awful landing.
Once the spot was given the green light to be part of the match, a rehearsal took place earlier in the day than usual, with a stunt coordinator involved to instruct on how to place the items in the right way and also to review the protocols being followed. Doctors were on-hand and on high alert for the spot, and an alternative finish was planned by the Young Bucks if needed.
As for the commentary team, they'd heard rumblings of some "outrageous spots" for the match, but they weren't filled in on what to expect. Likewise, as per Sting's wishes, only a select few people in the company were clued in on the finish of this contest.
While we'd previously heard how AEW President Tony Khan was the one pushing for Sting to emerge victorious in this bout and end his career as a champion, this latest report details how the Icon actually wanted to put the Young Bucks over. Holding Matt and Nick Jackson in high regard, the Stinger wanted them to get the win and the momentum that would come with retiring him. Much like Tony Khan, the Jacksons believed that Sting should go out with a big win. For Sting, he eventually came around to the idea of him and Darby winning, and the moment and reaction that would bring, would be best for AEW.
The only issue backstage after the match? It's that nobody wanted to leave the Greensboro Coliseum, for fear of losing the feeling they were experiencing.
