The Undertaker's WWE Career: 9 Ups & 5 Downs
4. Making Things Personal
Seeing Mark Calaway open up about his career on The Last Ride docuseries has been wonderful because it felt like we were finally getting to know the man behind 'The Deadman'. However, WWE's previous attempts to lift the veil between Calaway and 'Taker were less successful.
The American Badass persona remains a divisive subject for fans (and we'll get to that later) but the evolution felt natural and managed to sustain the aging character in a brand new era. The parts of it that didn't work so well, however, were when creative attempted to bring his personal life into it.
Again, the notion of this once-demonic supernatural creature having a personal life wasn't going to sit well with some but that's not what we're here to talk about (though it was a bit jarring!). No, the problem was the disturbing stories they came up with when venturing there.
Having DDP be the stalker of 'Taker's then-wife Sara ruined the WCW star's dreams of ever making it in WWE while the attempt to paint 'Big Evil' as an adulterer in his feud with Brock Lesnar fell flat and risked diluting this sacred character.
Thankfully, 'The Deadman's return exorcised all that.
