The Untold Truth About WCW Champion David Arquette

In the years that followed, David Arquette spoke on the decision, noting that he was hugely against the move. A lifelong mark for the industry, he wasn't such a mark that he didn't realise how bad the belt might look around his waist to the wrestling audience and the wider public at large. Admirable, and not the only time Arquette comes off as the only hero in this murky action adventure tale.

Noting how toxic the environment was backstage as result of the call, he once explained the reality of the poisoned chalice he was suddenly forced to sip from. Speaking to Sunday Night's Main Event, he said, "There was a lot of hatred, and a lot of people got so pissed off. I remember telling one wrestler, I'm not sure who it was...but it was someone who hadn't ever been the champion before. And he was just so pissed. I was like I don't know what to say, man."

Many have posited that his recent sideways entry into the independent scene via some bloody hardcore spotfests and ticket-selling showcase encounters such as the aforementioned Jerry Lawler p*ssabout are yet more efforts in atonement from the man who really shoulders the least blame for the shoddy situation.

Again, there's not enough good to be said about his contributions to a business he was as much a fan of as his actual own industry. In these circles at very least, an objectively great guy. Maybe WCW giving him the gold wasn't so stupid all along?

No. Of course it was.
