Career midcarder Jinder Mahal shocked the world by becoming WWE Champion at Backlash 2017. However, his reign made the belt look midcard, sadly, and few bought him as the kind of worker who'd realistically succeed a top name like Randy Orton. Still, surely the WWE marketing machine would kick in and shine Jinder up.

Or not.

Mahal's follow up summer feud with Shinsuke Nakamura was soaked in unfortunate race-baiting, and then their match at SummerSlam flopped. It was also Naka’s first loss on the main roster, so he was sacrificed to make Jinder look like a million bucks. Or, at least, that was the plan Vince McMahon had in mind.

Naturally (no-one reading will be surprised by this), McMahon lost all interest in Jinder after his initial flurry heading into the summer. His title reign died a slow death before AJ Styles ended it on a special episode of SmackDown taped over in Manchester, England. The top belt had been saved from further ignominy at the hands of an ex-3MB member not named Drew McIntyre.

People didn't want Mahal poking fun at Shinsuke's Japanese heritage via lame "comedy" skits on SmackDown, and they certainly didn't want to see Jinder working top billing at shows like SummerSlam. Even WWE knew that wouldn't fly, so they relegated the WWE Title match between Mahal and Nakamura to the sub-main event slot and let a far more enticing Fatal-4-Way clash for the Universal Title go on last.

Jinder's win over Shin couldn't even muster excitement for a possible babyface triumph, and that says it all.
