The WORST Moment From Every WWE WrestleMania

31. Wrestlers? On A Wrestling Show?! (WrestleMania XI)

Even the WWF knew that they didn't have a lot to shout about in 1995. That's why, when introducing the biggest night of the year, the company's WrestleMania XI opening video showcased celebrities over the rest of the roster. That's not hyperbole. They didn't splice celebs in with the wrestlers. The celebs took the floor solo.

Hilariously, all they really had for 'Mania IX was Jim Ross in a toga. Can't see TMZ running with that scoop!

'Mania XI was obsessed with the thought that celebrities from mainstream pop culture would put some shine back on the product. Salt-N-Pepa were there, so was Nicholas Turturro, and Jonathan Taylor Thomas was in the house. Meanwhile, both Pamela Anderson and Jenny McCarthy were in attendance too, and they played a part in the main event scene.

Apparently, all of this 'love us, love us' stuff was more important than focusing on the roster itself. No, Bret Hart vs. Bob Backlund wasn’t great by any means, but at least it spotlighted actual wrestlers and actual wrestling. That was more than could be said for lil' Jonathan Taylor Thomas shuffling out to play timekeeper for the night.

Vince McMahon was clearly desperate and looking for a hit. His roster had some big stars on it (Shawn Michaels, Bret, Diesel, The Undertaker etc), but times were hard and the WWF lacked the sheen of the Hulkamania days. That's why the boss turned to outside help, but exclusively focusing on them whilst ignoring the real reason why people tuned in to see the show (the wrestlers!) was silly.
