The WORST Moment From Every WWE WrestleMania

24. The Wrong Match Headlines (WrestleMania X8)

Chris Jericho Triple H WrestleMania X8
WWE

You could be the biggest Triple H fan in the world and this would still be true: He shouldn't have headlined at WrestleMania X8. The Rock vs. Hollywood Hogan was the banner match that year. It was even on the marquee in sumptuous "Icon vs. Icon" form. That was the poster kids had on their bedroom walls, not Hunter vs. Chris Jericho.

If it had, then the text would've read: 'Overlooked Champion vs. Comeback King Of Kings', to be fair. Yes, hindsight is 20/20 and the Undisputed WWF Title was up for grabs (everyone knew Trips was winning it), but their bout proved to be a dull as dishwater way to end the night. The show peaked when Hogan hulked up. End of story.

Actually, scrap that. That isn't the end of the tale.

Pre-PPV, Jericho had been pushed into the background as Triple H and Stephanie McMahon bickered like an old married couple. In TV terms, they were. The pair didn't tie the knot in real life until late 2003, but they'd been married on screen for a few years by that point. They were the narrative focus, not 'Y2J'.

In effect, Jericho became Steph's errand boy in the lead up to the biggest night of his career. He'd gone from beating Rock and Steve Austin in the same night at Vengeance to fetching McMahon coffee and becoming a walking punching bag for ‘The Game’. That was never going to best "Icon vs Icon".

Jericho vs. Trips was sucking wind as soon as the first bell sounded. Everyone just sort of sat on their hands waiting for the surefire Pedigree and Hunter title win.
