The WWE Superstar You Never Thought Would Leave... Is Leaving

WWE Elimination Chamber 2023 Edge Beth Phoenix

The FTR/Revival teases during the Elimination Chamber mixed tag team match against The Judgment Day were pronounced as if to make a point.

Finn Bálor scooted under the ring to get to the other side (get it, Judgment Day fans/fellow legends?) and rip Edge away from making the hot tag to Beth in a riff on a legendary spot used in The Revival's setag classic against American Alpha at NXT TakeOver: Dallas. Later on, as Ripley implored the former Universal Champion not to quit while both were trapped in Edgecator submission holds, the pair cut identical figures to Dash and Dawson trying to salvage a last gasp before losing the NXT Tag Team Titles to DIY at TakeOver: Toronto. Last but not least (if anything, it was most pronounced), the faces vanquished Bálor with the Shatter Machine AKA The Big Rig.

As he proved during his February 20th Raw main event with Austin Theory, 'The Rated-R Superstar' still has the knack for silky sweet match construction. In what was comfortably the United States Champion's best singles match in WWE and very possibly Edge's best straight one-on-one since his 2020 return, the Ottawa Raw main event will be fondly remembered as the night a wrestler's wrestler truly got his groove back.

Surprising Theory with several spots designed to put over the fact that the "old" dog has new tricks, it was a masterful display that felt very much like it was copying All Elite Wrestling's homework in how to get the very best out of active legends.

Two matches across three nights just days removed from heavy teases about a potential dream match with current AEW stars. Was this a total coincidence, or was this wrestling where nothing's ever coincidental?
