Joining Bischoff as "the newest member of the WCW broadcast team," Steve McMichael brought a bombastic energy to the commentary table. To the modern eyes and ears, McMichael will invoke comparisons to Jerry King Lawler during his Attitude Era high in popularity; only substituting the sleaze for extra shouting. McMichael also brings a joke hand shake buzzer as a prop, which, in the golden age of Bart Simpson, was likely to get a laugh.

The ex-professional footballer quickly became a competitor in WCW. He made his last WCW appearance on 8th February 1999 episode of Nitro and had no further notable wrestling engagements until refereeing a Monster's Ball match at Bound For Glory IV (2008). His future endeavours kept him away from pro-wrestling.

On 23 April 2021, McMichael announced that he was retiring from public life due to his struggles with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (also known as Motor Neurone Disease).
