What 10 WWE Comebacks Would Look Like

8. Rob Van Dam

RVD will always be a major “what-if.” In his initial WWE run, he was a beloved babyface who could have been a fixture in the main event scene. Unfortunately, when he finally got his opportunity in 2006, he was busted for marijuana possession and was forced to drop the WWE and ECW titles soon after. He left the company in 2007, and since then, has popped up every so often for a Royal Rumble appearance or brief run that spans a few months.

Van Dam has not been on WWE television since 2014, and with the coming Royal Rumble in Philadelphia, if there was ever a time Mr. ECW would make his return, that would be a safe bet. Should that return result in another run, it would be wise for fans to keep their expectations low. At best: Van Dam would have a decent midcard role, but his days as a main-eventer are well and truly behind him. The company just never saw him as “the guy,” and given that Van Dam is 46 and, as he attests in interviews, lost his old passion for the business, it’s safe to say he doesn’t see himself as the guy either.

Van Dam’s final run would be a nice nostalgia act that, if his other returns suggest, wouldn’t overstay their welcome. RVD would get an easy paycheck, go his own way, and everyone would at least be happy they got to see him again.
