What WWE WON'T Tell You About Triple H's Legacy
You could in theory respond with a list of very good to great matches Triple H has worked to argue that the aforementioned matches were selected to support a certain narrative. That one with Dean Ambrose from 2016 was a blinder, for instance. Daniel Bryan worked an awesome Daniel Bryan match with him at 'Mania XXX. There's probably a few more. But you'd still arrive at a similar conclusion via a score draw of a comparison; Triple H's major match record is appallingly inconsistent for a supposed legendary headlining superstar. The apparent all-time great is a mid-table football team, were this judged on points. He never won the league, Triple H, did he? Maybe he did in 2000. He's Blackburn Rovers, and that's only because they were Shawn's favourite team.
As his level of work declined, his worst impulses intensified, with many forming a link between the two. WWE might frame this, through the lens of the DX revivals, as evidence that Triple H had a wise-cracking, fun-loving side, when his schtick was in fact toxic, counterproductive and lamentably unfunny. They will in video packages celebrate that time Triple H drenched the McMahons in literal sh*t, but they likely won't do the same for the figurative sh*t with which he coated Chris Masters, Kofi Kingston, Wade Barrett, Zack Ryder, Lillian Garcia, the Spirit Squad, and so many others.
Here's another challenge: quickly, off the top of your head, how many classic Triple H lines can you remember?
