At the time that Demolition formed in 1987, the WWF tag team division was ticking over nicely with teams such as the Hart Foundation, the British Bulldogs, the Killer Bees, the Rougeau Brothers, and the Can-Am Connection, which soon broke up and led to the formation of Strike Force.

All of those teams were good to great, and all featured some incredible in-ring workers. What the tag ranks was missing, though, was a couple of monsters who could serve as the perfect base for the more energetic teams to work around. Of course, that's where Demolition came into play, with Ax and Smash the ideal oversized heels who could and would prove to be great foils for those aforementioned teams.

At a time when title shots were at a premium, it would be in September '87 when Demolition received their first crack at the WWF Tag Team Titles. Said shot came at a New Haven house show, with Demolition challenging the Hart Foundation for the gold in a match that ended up in a double DQ.

By the following March, Ax and Smash had their first taste of WWF gold, defeating Strike Force to become the new Tag Team Champions. From there, Demolition would embark on a record-setting reign of 478 days atop the company's tag ranks.

Successfully retaining the Tag Titles on 46 occasions, Ax and Smash would cement their status by picking up wins over the likes of the British Bulldogs, the Hart Foundation, the Rockers, the Brain Busters, the Powers of Pain, the Twin Towers, and in rematches against Strike Force.
