Wrestlemania 29: Why CM Punk Needs The Time Off After 'Mania

CM Punk CC1 CM Punk has been white hot the last eighteen months. Though John Cena may be still pushing the most merchandise, there is little doubt that it is the storylines with CM Punk that have driving the product. It was Punk who had the title match with the Rock at the Royal Rumble. It was Punk before that who faced the heavily pushed Ryback at Hell in a Cell ( albeit when John Cena himself was injured and could not compete ). It was Punk also who was apparently behind the Shield and allowed the three to go from capable NXT performers to the best new angle in late 2012. And now, although the Rock and John Cena faced off for the WWE Title at Wrestlemania, it was Punk who had the match that stole the show- against the Undertaker. With all this in mind it may seem bizarre that rumours abound that CM Punk is taking time off after Wrestlemania 29. But looking at the idea a little deeper, it actually makes perfect sense. After last night's predictable Taker win, Punk has now lost 3 PPV matches in a row, and according to many he is carrying some nagging injuries and is reluctant to let on exactly how injured he is- ironically just like the Undertaker. There is no better time for the creative team to give the Second City Saint a reason to have some time off. However that happens, giving him some time off not only gives him some time to recuperate after a hectic 18 months, but also allows the WWE to move away from the same angles that he had before. Should he stick around it is difficult not to see CM Punk not chasing for the WWE Title. Depending on how he leaves, and how he returns, Punk can re-align himself in a completely different feud- possibly a non-title one. Finally, should Punk leave the main event scene for a PPV or two, particularly now in the 'slow' months following Wrestlemania, there's a gap for a rising wrestler to step up and take his place. While the WWE may be loath to try out new main event talent at a major PPV, Punk can step aside during April and May to let the WWE see if they have another talent who may be able to carry a major title. There is no doubt that CM Punk is a massive asset to the WWE, but to make sure that he's utilsed correctly, the company needs to make sure that he can have as much impact as possible. Giving him a few weeks off to recover from his nagging injuries should ensure that he not only comes back fresher, but also allows for some new oppurtunities for both Punk and the WWE.
