WrestleMania 33 Review: 10 Major Talking Points
6. The Women's Devolution
The first half of the barely anticipated RAW Women's Title Fatal 4-Way match was superb. Nia Jax looked like a monster - the mere sight of her three opponents approaching her tentatively did more for her aura than any amount of squash matches - and she took an awesome bump from a big boot into a double German suplex. The timing was off - she smacked the canvas with the top of her head - but the violence put it over the top.
Wrestling is ghoulish like that, but it's also beautiful. Charlotte's aerobics were graceful enough to linger in the memory on a night which, if nothing else, certainly wasn't forgettable.
Most were expecting the match to improve when Jax was removed from the fray, but the opposite happened. A combination of botches (the turnbuckle padding remained in place after Charlotte attempted to remove it) and timing issues (Banks' exit was too sudden to buy) meant the drama of the subsequent eliminations was negated.
That much of the internet fandom has barely discussed the match is a talking point in itself. Last year, the Women's Title Triple Threat match was the best match on the card. Here, the women were treated as an afterthought, even if they did get the video package treatment. They deserved so much more than this. The booking of the match, unfortunately, mirrored the booking of the division. The blue brand fared little better. James Ellsworth was more of a focal point than Becky Lynch.
Something's wrong there.
