Wrestling Timelines: The Ministry Of Darkness

6. The Undertaker Beats Steve Austin At Over The Edge (May 23, 1999)

It was the younger McMahon who was left smiling after Over The Edge. Credit must be given to The Undertaker and Steve Austin for even being able to construct a match, because they were likely still reeling from the horror of the Owen Hart accident earlier in the evening. The Undertaker became WWF Heavyweight Champion on the show, which set the scene for the culmination of the 'Higher Power' angle. Undertaker had been talking about the idea of acting under instruction from another authority figure for months, and fans wondered who it might be.
