7. Lance Storm - Episode 17
And now for something completely different! You may know Lance Storm as one of the Un-Americans, or as the guy who would ask, with irony, if he "could be serious for a moment." You may know him from his trail-blazing website, part straight-shooting wrestling blog, part legit wrestling school (you may also know one of his students, Dolph Ziggler). You don't get more straight-faced or clean-living than Lance Storm. At face value, he's a strange combination with Stone Cold, whose expressive voice and lively theatrics sit in contrast to Storm's even tempered, almost formal tone. Lance Storm is the real deal - not because he's all serious and staid, but because he is a disciplined, skilled wrestler who sports his humour and his passion in more subtle ways. What makes Lance appealing is his self-awareness. He owns his convictions, and is able to clearly express how his beliefs have served him well (without implying that everyone else is wrong). He talks about how he conducted himself during life on the road, and resisted the myriad temptations in order to protect his health and his marriage. Austin shares his stance on Vince McMahon's role in wrestlers' drug-related deaths, on which Lance weighs in with his own opinion. I love that Austin doesn't shy away from controversy or debate, without antagonizing anyone or being overly sensational. You'll learn about the inner workings of the Storm Wrestling Academy, where Lance runs a methodical, reputable training program. His own experience in the ring reads like a how-to manual: meeting Chris Jericho on their first day at the Hart camp, learning different techniques in Japan, the exotic world of Smoky Mountain Wrestling, and getting an education from Paul Heyman in ECW. He also did time in WCW, and was the last on screen there and the first on screen in WWE for the Invasion. All that, plus he has wrestled the likes of Chris Hero and Daniel Bryan in Ring of Honor. Give Lance a listen, and you will develop an even deeper respect for this intelligent ring technician.
