WWE: 10 Big Stars In Worthless WrestleMania Matches
8. Steve Austin vs. Scott Hall - WrestleMania 18
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1Ua2T9b9Vs Perhaps calling Steve Austin vs. Scott Hall worthless is a bit of an overstatement, but there's no doubt that WWE creative just wasn't that interested in their feud. Hall was still a big star at that point, but he was nowhere near as hot as he was a few years earlier in WCW. He just had too many personal demons, and carried too much baggage to compete at an elite level anymore. Austin was also not at the top of his game at the time (which he even admitted to Hall in his podcast recently). There were other, bigger matches on the card, and these two just felt thrown together for the sake of getting them both on the show. Most of the focus at WrestleMania 18 was going to The Rock and Hulk Hogan. Of course, Hogan is the bigger star than Hall so it makes sense from that perspective. But creative didn't give anywhere near enough attention to building up Hall and Austin to make it feel like any sort of dream match. This was Steve Austin battling the NWO! It should have been huge. But it might as well have been Charlie Haas taking the group on. Besides Hogan and Rock, Chris Jericho and Triple H for the Undisputed Championship, and Ric Flair vs. The Undertaker were promoted more aggressively than Austin's match. Despite main-eventing the past three out of four WrestleManias (and he only missed out on WrestleMania 2000 due to injury) Austin felt like an afterthought. It wasn't long after that he left the company for awhile. Due to the promotion of this match, and political games being played behind his back, he was unhappy with his wrestling career. In 1998, with the right build, Hall vs. Austin would have been huge. In 2002, when neither of their hearts were in it, it just felt kind of sad.
As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at."
Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week.
