8. Cactus Jack & Mikey Whipwreck vs. The Public Enemy - Hardcore TV, August 27, 1994
When it comes to underdogs, nobody was more extreme than Mikey Whipwreck. In the summer of '94, Cactus Jack was in the midst of a war with "Flyboy" Rocco Rock and Johnny Grunge, the seemingly unbeatable ECW World Tag Team Champions known as The Public Enemy. Cactus Jack needed a tag team partner to combat Rocco and Grunge. ECW fans stood in anticipation, speculating which hardcore legend would emerge from the locker room to stand by Jack's side to take on the "mac daddies of violence?" That's why it was the ultimate in extreme surprises when Cactus Jack chose Mikey Whipwreck, an 18-year-old kid ECW discovered on their ring crew, who had only one -- maybe two -- offensive maneuvers in his arsenal. But the results were quite surprising. At the time, The Public Enemy were one of the most brutal and violent tag teams in ECW, and had run through everyone from the Funk Brothers to the Bruise Brothers to the team of Paul Diamond and Pat Tanaka. Even the maniacal team of Kevin Sullivan and The Tazmaniac couldn't stop The Public Enemy. Extremely entertaining right from the start, Whipwreck cracks a board over the head of Rocco and Grunge, like a rite of passage into the Land of Extreme. "It's almost like Mikey Whipwreck is growing his first (long pause) facial hair!" says Joey Styles. "I said facial hair!" To the delight of the hot ECW crowd, Cactus Jack uses Whipwreck like a battering ram. To everyone's disbelief, Whipwreck delivers picture-perfect dropkicks, followed up with a back body-drop to Grunge, while Jack puts Rocco through a table outside the ring. A few minutes later, a bloodied Whipwreck is the victim of a severe beating at the hands of "the hoodies" who pummel him with DDTs, suplexes, neckbreakers, leg drops, powerslams, back body drops, vicious clotheslines, and a face first piledriver. Amazingly, Whipwreck always manages to kick out of the pin attempts, or is saved by Cactus Jack. All four wrestlers battle their way into the crowd as crutches from fans are used as weapons. Jack and Whipwreck are then decimated by The Public Enemy. "It's an ECW drive-by!" exclaims Joey Styles, describing the horror. Back in the ring, Rocco hits a shooting star press on Cactus through a table, as it looks like the end for the team of Jack and Whipwreck. Then out of nowhere, amidst all the mayhem and extreme chaos, Mikey clumsily rolls up Rocco for the pin. The crowd goes absolutely nuts as Whipwreck and Jack defeat The Public Enemy to become the new ECW World Tag Team Champions. Every fan in attendance is on their feet, in what may be one of the most extremely joyous and unexpected celebrations in ECW history.
