WWE: 10 Gimmicks That Should Have Failed (But Didn't)

8. Honky Tonk Man

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8Ca3XDnkSo So we've all seen them, glittering in their sequined outfits, shaking their hips and curling their lips to the music of a man long dead. But who would have ever guessed that an Elvis impersonator would dare to step between the ropes of the squared circle and shimmy those hips right into our hearts? My guess is not a whole lot, yet that was exactly what happened when Honky Tonk Man came on to the scene in 1986. Of course he wasn't a crowd pleaser, not when he spent so much of his time smashing his guitar over the head of our heroes but that was what was so great about him. You genuinely loved to hate the guy. So much so that he held the Intercontinental Championship for a record one year, two months and twenty seven days and fans were almost manic with their desire to see him loose it. Honky Tonk Man might never have won the big title, but he gave us such a lasting impression that even today when we see a guitar, we feel the incredible urge to smash it over the nearest person's cranium and wiggle our hips doing it.
