Much like the Tag Team Titles, WrestleMania has been host to some classic Intercontinental Title matches in the past like Randy Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat, Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon in a ladder match, and Roddy Piper vs. Bret Hart. It's a match on the card that has been effectively used to showcase future top stars. This year, the Intercontinental Champion, Big E, is going to be competing in a potentially worthless 30 man Andre the Giant battle royal. He already has a title! What does he want with a statue? Couldn't WWE have found anyone for him to take on this this year? Last year at Mania, the Intercontinental Title at least made the pre-show. The year before that, Cody Rhodes defended it against The Big Show on the actual card. At this rate, it won't even exist next year! Overall, the Intercontinental Title hasn't meant much at recent Manias. But the important difference is that this year there is no longer a World Heavyweight Title. The Intercontinental Title should be positioned in a more prestigious role than it has been in over a decade, since the brands first split. On Raw, we just saw a great fatal-four-way match with Dolph Ziggler vs. Sheamus vs. Christian vs. Alberto Del Rio. With enough hype, that could have been an exciting Mania match. Instead, the winner got to take on Big E the next night on Main Event. That pretty well sums up how the company feels about their secondary title. It almost seems that WWE is afraid that people won't order Mania if there's an Intercontinental Title match on the card.
As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at."
Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week.
