WWE: 10 Greats Who Never Won The Royal Rumble

9. CM Punk

CM Punk has appeared in 5 Royal Rumble matches, and has appeared in Championship matches on PPV on two occasions. He's the only full time wrestler I've placed on this list, and with good reason. There are many current superstars I think should win the Rumble, Daniel Bryan or Dolph Ziggler spring to mind immediately. Unlike Punk, however, I don't think it would be fair to describe them as 'great' just yet. 2011's Summer of Punk was exciting for many fans, and Punk was peerless during that time in WWE, eclipsing many superstars who have had the honour of winning the Rumble. His 5 appearances in the Rumble have been mixed. Though he lasted 35 minutes in 2011, he's never made it to the final four, and has never really looked like a genuine threat. His appearance in the 2010 Rumble was one of my favourites, and although he didn't seem to be a real threat to win the event, his attempts at messianic control over the rest of the competitors was a fantastic angle. The bearded Punk attempted to use the sheer will of his personality to try and defeat 30 other men, in the process enlivening the start of the match. Which Royal Rumble could they have won? 2011. This was the year of CM Punk, though his true push didn't start until the summer of this year with his infamous pipe-bomb promo sat upon the ramp. With hindsight being 20-20, WWE could have started the rise of Punk to the very top of the business with a win at the Royal Rumble. Edge carried the World Heavyweight Championship into Wrestlemania XXVIII and that would have led to a terrific Wrestlemania match.
