WWE: 10 Moments Of Extreme Bad Taste
5. Virgil, Ted DiBiase And Racism http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5GZO3Hfa4A DiBiase in the late 80s/early 1990s traded in on the name and persona of The Million Dollar Man. He had a glittering 'Million Dollar Belt' of his own and after he executed his finishing move - a sleeper hold, he would stuff wads of cash into his opponent's unconscious mouth. A bit outré really, but it was the 80s. But what was not fine was DiBiase's valet Virgil, a young, silent black man, who acted as a servant to DiBiase and did everything required of him - carrying DiBiase's bag and wearing a sleeveless tuxedo. In their first video together, DiBiase openly states that he 'owns' Virgil to which Virgil replies 'Yessuh!'. It was a blatant admission of slavery. Bobby Heenan apparently coined the name Virgil after Dusty Rhodes (whose real first name is Virgil) because Dusty 'acted black' in his interviews (remember Sweet Sapphire?) The character of Virgil was deeply offensive, but wrestling has never known to be PC. The most egregious act of racism, for my money, was the creation of Akeem the African Dream (George Gray) - so all Africans want to be huge fat white men? The character was a terrible creation and offensive to Africa.
