WWE: 10 Reasons We Want Evolution Vs The Shield At Extreme Rules
8. Allows Orton And Batista To Be Hated As Characters, Not As People
It has been a rough title reign for Randy Orton. He was booed out of multiple buildings, sometimes by design, other times because the fans were simply tired of seeing him have bad matches in the main event. His match with Big Show at Survivor Series and matches with John Cena at TLC and Royal Rumble weren't booed because Orton was the heel, but because fans were sick of seeing him put on bad matches (the one with Show was a stinker) and wrestle the same opponents for the 1000th and 1001st time (we're all a bit tired of Cena vs. Orton at this point). He became Randy Boreton, and name that derives from apathy to the character and not the villainy Randy was trying to portray. Batista didn't have a much better go around since returning in January. The WWE botched his return by trying to make him a fan favorite, only to realize that the fans didn't want to cheer babyface Bootista, and that Big Dave was a much better heel performer from the get go. They eventually turned him, but the damage had been done and his presence has lost the appeal it arguably should have had, had he returned as a heel and been telling us that he was great and we were all just jealous and needed to "deal with it". Both Randy and Batista were lost in the shuffle leading up to Wrestlemania XXX and were being hated on for reasons that weren't part of their characters. A rivalry with The Shield is just what the doctor ordered for these two men. It allows for Randy Orton to be a villain and be booed for the actions his characters take and not because of the fact that he is boring or always wrestles the same guys, because he won't be. It allows for Batista to be an A$$#@!* and not have to worry about fans not wanting him around. Their participation in this feud makes them heels, not guys that the people don't care to see, which is a huge step in the right direction.
