WWE: 10 Surprising Revelations From The 1991 Summerslam Payroll Sheet

2. Ref's Aren't All Paid The Same!

Referees This kind of shocked me, perhaps more than anything, mostly because I can't wrap my head around the pay structure for the refs. Here is what each referee was paid for the work they did (not counting Sid Justice): - Earl Hebner: $3500 for refereeing Mr. Perfect vs. Bret Hart (Intercontinental Title Match) and Ted DiBiase vs. Virgil (Million Dollar Title Match). - Joey Marella: $2200 for refereeing Big Boss Man vs. The Mountie (Jailhouse Match). - Fred Sparta: $1500 for refereeing the 6-man tag opening match. - Danny Davis: $1000 for refereeing Bushwackers vs. Natural Disasters; The Nasty Boys vs. Legion of Doom (Tag Team Title Match); and I.R.S. vs. Greg Valentine. - Tim White: $750, although he did not referee on this show. Perhaps he was paid as Andre's driver/handler for this show. What makes this so hard to break down is there seems to be no rhyme or reason to who was paid what: Hebner was obviously the Senior Official, and refereed two of the three title matches on the card; Marella for a long time was considered the top referee, but here he only presided over one match-up; then there is Sparta, who doesn't exactly have a ton of refereeing accomplishments under his belt, yet he made more for his one match than the former "Dangerous" Danny Davis made for three. It seems almost arbitrary to me. Additional Fun Facts: Special referee for the main event Sid Justice made 2.7-times the pay than all of the other referees combined.
