Cesaro's european character isn't a gimmick, he really is from Switzerland. So how did he end up living and working in the United States? It wasn't down to his skilled vocation, it was in fact down to a random win of the green card lottery. The green card lottery is a process where "Each year, 50,000 United States permanent resident visas are given away to citizens of countries with low immigration rates into the U.S.", basically a random chance for people to come to America to live and work for life. Cesaro got a golden ticket, he hit the jackpot. "I participated in a lottery for a Green Card, because only if you have a Green Card you are allowed to full time wrestle here. Luckily, I got such an employment permit and emigrated." Just imagine how differently things could have turned out if his name hadn't been selected. Not being a resident of America would have meant less time touring the independent circuit which got him noticed by WWE. It's funny how fate works out, he got randomly selected to come to America, now he is a global star of World Wrestling Entertainment ... proving the USA is the land of opportunity!
