6. The In-Ring Generosity

When you watch an Eddie Guerrero match, you really get the sense that it was the match itself (or rather, the story being told) that counted. Guerrero wasnt about self-promotion; he wasnt about 'all take and no give', the way so many other regularly televised wrestlers seem to be, at least, he never came across that way to me. Guerrero was never desperate to prove himself at the expense of the match, nor did he ever seem to be jealously guarding his spot in order preserve a place in the pecking order. He put the story and the character first, at all times. As a fan with an appreciation for such things, it made him impossibly endearing to me. He would visibly give to his opponent, selling the crap out of their stuff, no matter where they were on the card. If you go back and watch his matches from any era, in any promotion, Eddie seems to always be about teamwork (as well as putting the other guy over as much as possible). Its what made him such an effective heel, but equally it made him a great underdog to root for. In a professional context, Eddie seems to have always been a very giving guy. He seems to me to be the equivalent of a colleague in the office who helps you get a project in on time, but never asks you for the return favour. You do well, the company does well, so all is well. Thats a very rare commodity indeed.
