5. Triple H Implicated Into The Rock / Austin Era
Things were not going to plan for the Kliq. For years Michaels had planned for Hunter to take his spot, but the reality was that Austin and Rock were unstoppable forces of nature. Triple H was meant to be the man, but he just wasn't able to surpass the talent in front of him. The power of The Kliq diminished even further when Shawn had to take time out to deal with personal issues. Suddenly, Hunter was suddenly very isolated. However, 'The Game' stepped up. All he could do now was prove himself in the ring and on the mic and he did. Triple H worked hard and attained a position teetering on the main event. He was meant to win the WWF title off Steve Austin at Summerslam 1999, but Austin refused to do the job. Seemingly Hunter's behavior with the Kliq had created several enemies in the WWF locker room. Instead Austin dropped the belt to Mankind, and on the next evening Hunter beat Mankind to win his first WWF title. Hunter was on top and he wasn't going to let this position slip. The Kliq was losing power, but as a WWF main eventer, Triple H never lost faith in his own ability. He would be the main man in the WWF. He believed in it with a passion.
