WWE: 12 Wrestlers With Retirement On Their Mind

9. Rey Mysterio

The physical problems of Rey Mysterio have been well documented, his left knee lacks cartilage and is basically bone on bone arthritic. It has led the star to miss large amounts of ring time in recent years and he even developed a substance abuse problem at one point in order to subside the pain. When his contract expires this year, retirement is surely on both his mind and WWE. Despite being a valuable merchandise retailer and having name value as a draw, the company is sick of paying Mysterio to sit at home injured. His formal retirement makes sense for both parties. In saying that it will come as a blow to merchandise sales and is another loss for advertising star power on house shows. Who replaces him in these manners? No one is really stepping up right now and WWE lacks characters like Mysterio. It will be a shame for the company to lose him but it's hard to see how the relationship can continue.
