WWE: 15 Most Important Undercard Matches In WrestleMania History

6. Batista vs The Undertaker (WrestleMania 23)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDPKji_fGZ8 Now for a trilogy of Undertaker 'Mania matches! Reportedly, following this bout at Wrestlemania's second highest ever grossing edition to date, Batista went backstage and when he reached Gorilla, shouted: "LET'S SEE THEM FOLLOW THAT!" He was making reference to John Cena and Shawn Michaels who would main event the show, that night, wrongfully in Batista's opinion. Relegated to only the 4th match on an 8-match show, Undertaker's capture of the World Heavyweight Title in his 15th Wrestlemania victory from Batista went on to become several publications Match of the Year and Undertaker's first World Championship victory in 5 years. It was also perhaps the first match of Undertaker's legendary Streak in which WWE really attempted to push the boat out in using the Streak as a promotional tool. Whilst Randy Orton had mentioned breaking the Streak in his 'Mania 21 bout against Taker 2 years prior, the 'Legend Killer's aim in defeating Undertaker was more grounded in simply that, defeating a legend. With Batista, it became THE story of the match: "Title vs Streak". They would repeat the same angle again a year later with Edge. Perhaps harshly treated in the wake of John Cena's overwhelming rise to super-stardom and the superb success that was the promotion of the "Battle of the Billionaires" bout between Donald Trump and Vince McMahon, Batista's embittered and proud reaction is not only understandable but worthy of respect. He and 'Taker stole Wrestlemania 23 and should be proud for doing so.
