4. SummerSlam 2002
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGNe25GMrJI Highlights: Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H, Brock Lesnar vs. Rock, Rey Mysterio vs. Kurt Angle SummerSlam 2002 is one of my favorite wrestling shows ever. It's also one of the best, so that's always a plus when talking about a favorite. Stacked from top to bottom is a good way to describe it. The Long Island crowd isn't the MSG crowd, but they are close enough and they were certainly loud like a MSG crowd. Shawn Michaels return to the ring against his "former best friend" Triple H in an unsanctioned match (basically a no DQ match) is the highlight of the show for me. We didn't know how long Michaels would be back or what he was going to be like in his return after four years out of action. What we got was a classic match with Michaels as the underdog babyface that wouldn't quit and he ended up beating the guy that was on top of the company for the majority of the three years before this match. When Michaels won, everybody cheered. It was an amazing moment. When Hunter attacked him post match, it was one of the cheapest heel moves possible. Great storytelling in that match. Opening match was great as Rey Mysterio made his WWE debut against Kurt Angle. No better way to make a first impression than by going up against one of the best in the world. It would have been nice if they got more than 10 minutes, but as far as 10 minute matches go there are few that are better than this one. The main event was memorable in a passing the torch sort of way as Brock Lesnar won the WWE Title from The Rock. Lesnar was the star on the rise while Rock was a main eventer that put over a lot of people and that's what happened here as it should have. What was great is that the crowd cheered for Lesnar for the majority of it. It's not that Rock was a bad performer. It's just that the fans wanted something new. WWE fed Lesnar to them and they embraced him. Two years later he'd leave the company, but at that point he was as hot as anybody on the show. The rest of the show featured plenty of other good matches as RVD beat Benoit, Edge over Eddie, Un-Americans over Goldust/Booker and Undertaker/Test although that one was forgettable. It was the best show of 2002, which wasn't really a great year for WWE because they were trying a lot of different things. It's also one of the better PPVs in WWE history.
