WWE: 5 Phrases That Michael Cole Uses That We Are All Sick Of

3. "I Was Talking To X Earlier Today And He Told Me..."

Play-by-play commentary is not an easy thing. The commentator has to remember a lot of different wrestling manoeuvres whilst being able to convey them in a way that is emotive enough to help the fans become emotionally invested in the match. JR was a master at this, being able to put wrestlers over by using his expertise of wrestling moves and techniques as well as the raw emotion in his voice to help wrestlers to be brutal, tenacious, diabolical and so much more. Michael Cole has neither the wrestling background nor the raw vocal power that Jim Ross has as his background is news journalism. For some unknown reason the powers that be believe that this is something that would make him an announcer on par with JR as he can use his legitimate reporting background to give WWE viewers the 'inside scoop'. The problem is that it doesn't make Michael Cole look like a credible announcer- quite the opposite because the things that he claims the superstars have said to him "earlier today" or "before the match" are just truly inane. Things like "I was speaking to Sheamus earlier today and he told me how important tonight was in order to build momentum to the Elimination Chamber". As opposed to what? "I was speaking to Sheamus earlier today and he told me how he thought he could take this match easy." Furthermore, while he is doing these 'inside scoops' he isn't calling the match! The two wrestlers are doing moves in the ring and Cole is talking about how one of them wanted to win the match! Why not talk about the actual match instead?
