3. Straight Edge Society
From the moment of their inception in late 2009, The Straight Edge Society was one of the WWE's most intriguing, entertaining acts. CM Punk, resembling a blasphemous straight edge messiah, led his disciples Luke, Joseph and Serena into battle for the souls of the unclean and weak-minded individuals of the world that needed to be saved. The group had several memorable moments including a fantastic feud with Rey Mysterio, but sadly their run came to a close in September of 2010, a mere 10 months after their formation. There were many reasons why the group's run ended so quickly, you could blame how weakly the faction was booked in terms of actually garnering victories, or you could blame injuries suffered along the way for their ultimately short run. Regardless of what you blame, their split wasn't simply a creative decision. The Straight Edge Society had the potential to run as a solid team for well over a year. The live crowds hated them. They got so much heat whenever they entered an arena, and could have been positioned as the top heel faction in WWE. How much more interesting would the Wrestlemania 27 main event have been with John Cena trying to capture the WWE title from CM Punk, flanked by the S.E.S. while also dealing with The Rock? It certainly would have been a better match than the one with The Miz, and I just think Punk's promo style intermingling with The Rock's and Cena's would have been more compelling, especially if he was still S.E.S. Punk at the time. Ultimately the break-up of the S.E.S. was unremarkable. Serena was released, Punk beat and condemned Gallows who was subsequently released, and Joseph Mercury was lost to injury. The group crumbled before our eyes and there was little that could have been done to save it. With all that said, I wish it had lasted longer.
