WWE: 6 Examples Of The Legacy Left By WWE's ECW

6. Birth Of The Anti-Cenation

Circa 2005 John Cena and the Cenation was going at full steam, rampaging across the WWE Universe like some devouring monster. The man was literally untouchable, just as his previous entrance theme entailed. Cena was the golden boy, the new Hulk Hogan, he was getting pops unheard of since Stone Cold and was the face and main draw of the company not unlike the Rock was before him. He could do no wrong in the eyes of both the mainstream community and the higher ups. But then something happened. ECW was suddenly given a new voice with a brand new pay per view called One Night Stand, named that way as it was meant to be for one night only. And those Extremists who had seen through the façade of John Cena since day one finally got to show just how they felt about this wannabe who to them in reality had nothing on any of those iconic characters or in regards to talent, nothing on most lower card wrestlers currently employed with the WWE. Some of the chants heard throughout Planet ECW (see what I did there?) on that groundbreaking event I can't repeat on this site due to their vulgarity but the point was made and their voices and passion for ECW resonated around the WWE Universe and with many mainstream WWE fans. Along with the talent on show and the success of the PPV a lot of people re-evaluated their position on the Doctor of Thuganomics and the Anti-Cenation was born. Which was taken to a whole new level at the following One Night Stand event. After One Night Stand 2 anti Cena crowds became a regular fixture on WWE tours and on television. And to this day they are even more prevalent, mainly thanks to the popularity of stars like Daniel Bryan and CM Punk (more on him later). So when people chant Cena Sucks or the arena boos him out of the building, you have WWECW to thank for that. In fact, that statement is a great segueway to something else that occurred thanks to the rebirth of Extreme in regards to the new generation of young fans.

Passions in life: Movies, Music and Wrestling....My childhood was spent growing up in the "Outback" of Australia (I'm a little bit country) and my adulthood resided within the city limits (I'm a little bit rock and roll), so you could say that I am the best (or worst) of both worlds. A 6 foot 7 ex wannabe pro wrestler (whose career was cut short due to a busted back, NOT caused by wrestling) & muso who has a precocious cat & a habit of doing the wrong thing but for the right reasons. The story of my life???? All demos, no albums ;)
