WWE: 6 Reasons Why Ratings No Longer Matter

5. The Cenation

Love him or hate him (I am part of the latter), there is absolutely no doubt that this generation of kids have been brought up under the guidance of John Cena's immortal catchphrase of hustle, loyalty and respect. And they will follow their leader to the ends of the earth, just like all of us Hulkamaniacs did back in the day. The main difference between Cena and Hogan though is that John Cena's influence has spread to all corners of the Earth, whereas Hulkamania was more confined to specific territories around the world (Australia, England, Japan, Canada). Every second kid in Australia seems to be sporting their pop culture hero's colours proudly, whether through official merchandise or shoddy knockoffs. The John Cena merchandise machine has transcended even the WWE's expectations, with people who don't even watch wrestling telling us all that we can't see them or wearing the latest Cena shirt. You see, this is why they don't turn him heel, as they are not only worried about local merchandise sales, but the fact that they might lose there one relevant global cultural asset (although this may change considering Daniel Bryan's current popularity and universal appeal). When you take that into account, turning Cena heel is definitely not what's best for business. It would take a bold plan to make it work. Again, people might allude to Hogan and the nWo, but Hogan not only had the support of other A list Superstars, but his cultural relevance in the 90s was somewhat lacking and he needed a big change in image to stay at the top. The Cenation is alive and well. And flourishing worldwide. Which means people EVERYWHERE are watching. And who cares about a 3.0 rating in the United States when you have another 100 million people watching around the world, with possibly half of those viewers John Cena fans. It's not rocket science people.

Passions in life: Movies, Music and Wrestling....My childhood was spent growing up in the "Outback" of Australia (I'm a little bit country) and my adulthood resided within the city limits (I'm a little bit rock and roll), so you could say that I am the best (or worst) of both worlds. A 6 foot 7 ex wannabe pro wrestler (whose career was cut short due to a busted back, NOT caused by wrestling) & muso who has a precocious cat & a habit of doing the wrong thing but for the right reasons. The story of my life???? All demos, no albums ;)
