
One title that is synonymous with WWE history is the Intercontinental Championship. It is a title that has been held by the likes of Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Shawn Michaels, Chris Jericho and so many other greats of the industry. At this year's Wrestlemania, it was on the pre-show after which the winner lost the belt subsequently the night after. Likewise former United States Champion Antonio Cesaro was regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in the industry leading up to Wrestlemania by many who had seen him work in the squared circle and yet he could not even find a place on the card when the Show of Shows was booked. The fact of the matter is that much of the heritage of these two titles has been badly tarnished over the last couple of years by the WWE's use of the Intercontinental and Unites States Championships. For some superstars- like Kofi Kingston- the belts have seemed more like millstones than stepping stones to getting to the main event scene. Furthermore, as more and more superstars get stuck holding more and more midcard titles without ever holding the big one, the gulf between midcard and main event stars widens, making it easier to see who's going to job for whom and making it more difficult for the mid card superstars to ever make that big leap. So these belts need some rebuilding and here are six ways that I think the WWE can help them on the way...
