WWE: 8 Embarrassing Early Gimmicks Future World Champions Want You To Forget

6. Kevin Nash €“ 'Oz', 1991

Kevin Nash spent so much time on top of both WWE and WCW, that it's hard to remember that at one point he played perhaps one of the worst gimmicks in professional wrestling history. In WWE, he was one of the longest reigning world champions of all time. Later in his career, he would be an integral part of the New World Order and would be the first man to defeat Goldberg. But before all these accolades, he had to endure playing a character based on "The Wizard of Oz". By 1991, Ted Turner (who owned the Turner Classic Movies cable channel, as well as WCW) acquired the rights to the classic 1939 film, and what better way to promote the film then by having one of your wrestlers portray its main character. Nash would come to the ring through a castle backdrop clad with mystical music, green lighting, and emerald-covered ring attire. The gimmick did not last a full year. The thing about Kevin Nash was that he really didn't need much of a gimmick; the secret to getting the best out of Nash was to just give him a microphone and let him be the cool and cocky individual that he truly was. Once wrestling promoters figured this out, Nash went on to become one of the biggest stars of the 90s.
