WWE: 8 WrestleMania Main Events That Almost Happened

3. WrestleMania XXIII: Booker T vs Shawn Michaels

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dc2N1lU_Mlc €œThe Battle of the Billionaires€ between Donald Trump and Vince McMahon at WrestleMania XXIII still stands as the marquee match of the most-purchased Pay-Per-View event in wrestling history. With Umaga as McMahon€™s proxy and Bobby Lashley as Trump€™s €“ and Stone Cold Steve Austin as the guest referee €“ it€™s little wonder that an environment explosive enough to draw in over 1,250,000 fans was created. Both Lashley and Umaga were pushed as world-beating tough guys, and when push came to shove, Lashley came out on top €“ and as a result, Vince McMahon€™s head was shaved in the middle of the ring. Early plans for the match were heading in a different direction, though €“ according to the Observer, rather than the slugfest that was Lashley versus Umaga, WWE was planning a more technical encounter, with (then-King) Booker T representing McMahon and Shawn Michaels representing Trump. In the end, the McMahon-Trump animosity likely had more to do with the success of the event than their choice of grapplers, but perhaps larger-than-life personalities like HBK and King Booker could have changed that. Plus, the combination of Booker and Michaels is interesting in and of itself €“ despite both men wrestling high on the card for much of the 2000s, they never had a major singles match.
