WWE And TNA: 7 Worst Moments Of The Week (August 16)

7. The Weighting Game

The biggest conspiracy in wrestling this week was who was behind Randy Orton making fun of Kevin Owens€™ weight on Raw? It€™s probably the best mystery WWE has had in years actually. The initial rumor was that the always devious Kevin Dunn was the culprit. That seems to have been dispelled. So who did it? Well, instead of speculating who the culprit is, can we at least agree that it was just a mean, unnecessary jab? The look on Owens€™ face when asked if he'd gained weight lately, and his simple €œNo€ response seemed to show that he had no idea that it was coming. It€™s just another classic case of WWE sending a message to their wrestlers on-screen instead of backstage, much like Vince McMahon making fun of Orton€™s diminished size post-shoulder surgery, or HHH and Shawn Michaels mocking Chris Masters for losing muscle mass post-wellness policy violation. The thing is, it shouldn€™t matter. Owens is still a better wrestler in the ring than 90% of the roster. He€™s a better talker than probably 95%. He has charisma, credibility and a unique look. But the deeply ingrained bullying system of the WWE is more obsessed with a few extra pounds than all of the positives someone brings. The insult just made Orton look like a heel, and Owens appear sympathetic. Probably not what they were going for.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
