WWE And TNA: 7 Worst Moments Of The Week (Feb 19)
3. UK Title On US Soil
Trent Seven and Tyler Bate are both talented guys, and they are badly needed in NXT at the moment. However, I can’t condone them feuding over the UK Title in Orlando! It's nothing against the lovely people in the UK, but it's about defending the integrity of the title, because WWE isn't always good at that sort of thing.
Years ago, the WWF came up with the European Title as a way to give European house shows a bit of a hook. It seemed like a good idea to drum up business in those markets, because major titles were never going to change hands there, but the European Title just might, since it wouldn't be defended in The United States. That makes sense! But Vince McMahon seemed to forget what the point of it was, and the title went from changing hands initially in Germany and England, to Lowell, Massachusetts.
The belt only changed hands one more time in Europe for the rest of its run. That was when Crash Holly won it in England and held it for two whole days. What a treat for those rabid overseas fans!
It just seems like they should be holding off on defending the belt until either the UK show starts up, or the company travels to the UK for a tour. Make it a special event. It kind of felt like (on a smaller level) when the WWF bought out WCW, and instead of waiting for the company to get their own show (which was the plan at one point), the belt was defended all the time on TV and Kurt Angle, The Rock and Chris Jericho all held the gold and it never meant anything.
In itself, this wasn’t a huge miss, but it’s a bit of a step in the wrong direction. Having the UK Title defended in NXT made it feel like more of a secondary NXT title than the ultimate prize of a new promotion.
