WWE And TNA: 7 Worst Moments Of The Week (Feb 5)

5. Rex And Spud

Aron Rex
Impact Wrestling

Over the past couple of years, TNA has done a pretty solid job of allowing wrestlers to play the character they want to play or letting them just be themselves. Drew Galloway and Bobby Lashley are doing the work of their careers because of this, and Matt Hardy has been allowed to experiment with his act to great success. Aron Rex also switched up his character dramatically, but so far it’s been an outright flop.

Rex and Rockstar Spud are really talented guys, but they’re playing gimmicks that seem destined to never get over. I gave Rex the benefit of the doubt before, as he was able to make Mizdow work as a character, but it seems it’s time to pull the plug on his newest invention.

Impact aired multiple comedy skits with the two and Robbie E, and they were painfully bad. Rex suddenly can’t handle any form of violence (despite being a wrestler for years) and his name MUST be sung. While that seems like it could be good, fun heat, it’s not translating over to the screen. His change was too abrupt and unwanted—and most importantly—it’s not performed in an effective way. None of it is working so far. The longer this thing goes, the more damage it’s going to do to their careers. This gimmick is almost making The Meta Powers team look good. Almost.

Rex has already changed up his character three times in a year while in TNA, but a fourth one should be weighing heavily on his mind.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
