4. Where’s The Fun?

Who would have been more fun to have in the Royal Rumble: Apollo Crews or Beaver Cleavage? Who would have popped the crowd more in the match: Mojo Rawley or Jake Roberts?

Most years WWE likes to throw in a few surprises for the Royal Rumble, and for me, that’s the most fun part of the show! Sure, Styles and Cena delivered a Match of the Year candidate, but where the hell was Meat? The 2016 version of The Rumble didn’t really attempt to deliver the surprise goods either. They only gave us one aging relic of the past in the match...and they gave him the win! However, 2015 had Bubba Ray Dudley, The Boogeyman and DDP. 2014 featured Kevin Nash and JBL. All we got this year was Tye Dillinger, and we just saw him the night before...in a match he lost! If I were Eric Young, I’d be pretty pissed off about that.

I get the argument that the spots in the match should go to the full-time talent. But I think this is one of those instances where you have to go with the entertainment value that will be provided in the moment. Fans knew guys like Crews and Rawley stood no chance of winning, and they weren't featured in a meaningful way, so why put them in? Their easy eliminations didn’t do anything for their characters. Put in a blast from the past, though, and it makes the match more fun. It’s as simple as that.

Hopefully 2018 brings back this concept. I’m starting to get a little worried that I’ll never see Alex Wright dance in the ring again.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
