In 1999, I was 14 years old; I was young, awkward and liked professional wrestling. Stephanie and Vince McMahon were the evil authority figures hogging most of the TV time, and HHH was the champion. In 2016, Im 31 years old, Im a bit older, still awkward and am frustrated by professional wrestling. Stephanie and Vince are the evil authority figures hogging most of the TV time, and HHH is the champion. Im sorry, theres just absolutely nothing that can get me excited for Hunter Hearst Helmsley holding the WWE Title for a 14th time. If you're into it, that's cooll. But even if Daniel Bryan made a miraculous return and was set for another showdown with him at Mania, or if Kevin Owens had caught fire, was turned face and ready to battle Hunter, I just wouldnt care. Any story involving him has essentially been told many times before, and most of them weren't that good. It kind of reminds me of Hulk Hogan's 2002 return, but worse. Hogan returned to WWE, and in April of that year he defeated the champion HHH (huh, imagine that), and briefly became the focus of the company. This was due to nostalgia. Hogan was 49-years-old at the time. Fans quickly rejected this, as nostalgia cant be the focus of a company. Wed just gone through the Attitude Era and were now going back 15 years in time. Hunter just won the title at The Royal Rumble, he is 46-years-old. It just feels like we should be a decade past this point. If the entire plan of him winning the gold is to put Roman over at WrestleMania, then well...it's still not going to work. But hey, HHH now can try and take credit for main-eventing in front of the biggest wrestling crowd in history. I'm sure that had absolutely nothing to do with the decision to put belt back on himself.
As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at."
Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week.
