Dolph Ziggler could realistically win clean at Backlash and leave with the WWE Intercontinental Title on his own merit. That's possible, even though it seems much more logical to have The Miz retain. There's one story with a hint of realism that WWE may make use of on the pay-per-view to explain why the braggart rogue has dropped the title.

On an episode of the WWE Network show Talking Smack, The Miz and Daniel Bryan tore into one another verbally. There seemed to be genuine animosity there, and Bryan - the SmackDown Live General Manager remember - even walked off the set in disgust. What if Bryan seeks payback on Miz at Backlash and costs him the Intercontinental Title?

This would be a risky move, simply because Bryan can't wrestle in the promotion any longer. He's retired, but WWE may create some tension between the GM and Shane McMahon because of this outcome. Although there's been heat, few would be expecting Daniel Bryan to outright cost The Miz his match against Dolph Ziggler, so it'd be quite the swerve.
