There were shocked glances when Dean Ambrose cashed in his Money In The Bank privileges this past June to become the new WWE World Champion. As much as it was a surprise, Ambrose wasn't able to sustain the glory. As his title reign has progressed, it's become clear that he would be much more effective as a heel.

The fact he's no longer on top of the title mountain may provide the opportunity for a turn shortly, but Ambrose has been surpassed by someone who is already a villain. AJ Styles deserves this moment, there's little doubt about that. He's the new WWE Champion, defeating Dean Ambrose at Backlash in the main event.

This could be WWE's way of setting the scene for a John Cena return in the next few months. Surely, Cena will pick right back up where he left off against Styles and feud with him over AJ's newly-won title. It's a direction that makes perfect sense, but it does leave Ambrose out in the cold should it happen.

Dean is in an interesting place character-wise at the moment, but he's no longer the top champ.
