The first champion in a belt's lineage can be vitally important to that title's credibility. For example, when Charlotte captured the new WWE Women's Title at WrestleMania 32, it felt like a huge moment. Even though she was heel, nobody could claim that Charlotte didn't deserve to win the gold. Similarly, Becky Lynch deserved her moment at Backlash too.

Had someone like Nikki Bella become the first SmackDown Women's Champion, it would have felt like a missed opportunity. With the new strap, there was a chance to enhance someone who had never been a champion in WWE, so Lynch fit the bill there.

Her post-match reaction, one of genuine emotion, proved that winning the title meant the world to the hard-working Irish wrestler. In Becky Lynch, SmackDown's writing team know they have a woman who will do everything to make the belt meaningful. That's precisely what the championship needs from the first ever titleholder.

There are ready-to-go feuds between Lynch and others like Alexa Bliss, Carmella or Natalya coming out of Backlash. She was the right choice.
