Why do I feel like this was the true reason for the SmackDown Tag Team Tournament? Sure, you've gotta find a way to crown your first champions, but the most engaging story throughout the brackets (and possibly in all of WWE post-draft) has been Heath Slater scratching and clawing his way towards a contract on RAW or SmackDown.

Despite coming up short in the tournament, I fully expect Slater to be rewarded with a full-time contract on SmackDown Live this Sunday. It would be a great feel-good moment on a show that is expected to be dominated by victories for the heels.

Slater is going to be a valuable player going forward, and despite not truly being on either draft he has arguably been the biggest beneficiary of the split to date.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
