What happened the last time an Intercontinental Champion, who vanished and was subsequently deposed in absentia, returned to TV and was placed in a ladder match for the right to win titles both in abeyance and lineal?

That's right: he lost an epoch-defining epic still talked about to this day, one which ultimately springboarded him towards one of the finest careers the wrestling industry has ever seen.

We get the feeling Clash of Champions won't exactly be Sami Zayn's WrestleMania X moment, but a ladder match featuring himself, Jeff Hardy and AJ Styles does at least promise to run the 1994 classic close. And, like Shawn Michaels, he'll probably lose: missing all summer, whether it was because he's became a new father or not, is the sort of thing WWE punish you for.
