WWE Cruiserweight Champions: Ranked From Worst To Best
15. Hornswoggle
It was obvious by the summer of 2007 that nobody in the company - sans maybe one or two of the wrestlers - actually cared about the Cruiserweight Title. Gregory Helms had held the belt for a year and then dropped it to Chavo Guerrero out-of-the-blue and for no real good reason.
Then Chavo had a pretty humdrum reign with the title, only defending it once on pay-per-view (against Jimmy Wang Yang at Night of Champions). Sensing that the belt didn't mean anything any more, WWE did what was akin to a mercy killing, having Hornswoggle unexpectedly win it in a scramble match at the Great American Bash.
He then went on to have a brief feud with Jamie Noble (which included Noble having a pie thrown into his face, being blasted with a large box and finally being trapped in a large box) before the belt was retired in September. Nobody cared because the belt had been devoid of meaning for a long time and the division was stale anyway.
A sad ending for a title which once had such promise.
